Why An Initial Consultation ?
It is important for you and Dr. Schuman to meet prior to your surgery appointment to have a pre-surgical
evaluation. He will evaluate your medical history, perform a clinical examination of your mouth, jaws, soft
tissues, and your x-rays. We use a Panoramic x-ray because it provides an excellent surgical view of
your jaws, teeth, and the vital structures within them.
This Panoramic x-ray allows Dr. Schuman to evaluate the important relationship of the roots of the lower
wisdom tooth to the main nerve that courses through the lower jaw, and the relationship of the upper
wisdom tooth to your sinus, the hollow space within the upper jaw.Dr. Schuman will then discuss his
findings with you and explain any proposed treatment, including the risks, benefits, possible
complications, and types of anesthesia available for you. This time is for you to have Dr. Schuman
answer all your questions.
Surgical Procedure
The surgical procedure consists of making an incision in the gum followed by making an opening in the
bone to visualize the tooth. The tooth is often divided into sections for easier removal. The surgical site
is then cleansed, and the gum tissue replaced to its original position.Sutures are placed if needed.
Following your surgery, you will rest in our recovery area until Dr. Schuman and his staff are satisfied with
your progress.Prior to being discharged, we will review the post-operative instructions including the most
effective way to take the pain medication prescribed for you with you and your driver.Your post-operative
appointment will be approximately 7 days following surgery for evaluation of your healing and removal of
any sutures.
We are here to assist you in all ways possible, and to make this experience as pleasant as possible.
Please feel free to ask Dr. Schuman and/or his staff any questions that you might have.
